MODI FILES NOMINATION PAPERS FROM VADODARA
Thursday, 10 April 2014 | Nayan Dave | VADODARA

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi filed nomination from Vadodara Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday, after a grand road-show marched from Vadodara’s landmark Kirti Stambh to Kothi Compound, Vadodara Collector’s office.
Modi, who had worked as Rashtriya Swayamsevek Sangh (RSS) pracharak in Vadodara for almost seven years, got resonant reception at the Vadodara airport as he arrived from Gandhinagar in the morning. Almost 15,000 BJP cadre and supporters gathered at Harni Airport to welcome him. The Gujarat CM also responded with fitting tribute to the cultural capital of Gujarat — Vadodara as his ‘Karmabhoomi’.
Modi reached Kirti Stambh where thousands of supporters were waiting for him for the mega road-show. With shouting slogans, waving of saffron flags and Modi cutouts, the top BJP leader started road show atop an open jeep with Gujarat BJP in-charge Om Prakash Mathur and Gujarat Ministers Anandiben Patel and Saurabh Patel onboard.
With presence of over one lakh people standing on the route, many of them wearing saffron Gandhi topi and saffron flag flying all over the places, the massive road show was literally transformed into saffron tint. Though Modi and other BJP leaders wanted to complete the road show on time as the NDA chairman was scheduled to address four rallies in Maharashtra later on, but heavily crowded roads didn’t allow them to move fast.
Finally his cavalcade reached at Kothi Compound - Vadodara collector’s office little later than scheduled time. Tea vendor Kiran Mahida, Rajmata Subhanginidevi Raje Gaikwad of Vadodara royal family, Parindu Bhagat (in-charge Gujarat BJP legal cell), Gujarat minister Nitin Patel, sitting Vadodara MP Balkrishna Shukla and other BJP leaders joined to file nomination. Rajmata and local tea vendor Mahida became proposer of Modi’s candidature, which was filed on the last day of filing nomination in Gujarat. Shukla filed nomination as dummy candidate.
“I initiated my political career from Vadodara. I hope the people of Vadodara will vote in large number for BJP on April 30 (Voting date),” said Modi after filing nomination form. The 63-year-old leader also found another connection with banyan city saying that his hometown Vadnagar was once party of erstwhile Vadodara State under Gaikwad rule.
He also connected BJP’s Good Governance agenda with that of Gaikwad dynasty, especially Maharaja Saiyajirao who was known for ‘Good
Governance’ and his initiatives for education. “I have been benefitted through the legacy of Gaikwad. My primary school was built by Gaikwad State. Maharaja Saiyajirao’s ‘Good Governance’ and his social welfare initiatives are relevant even today,” he added.
Meanwhile, ecstatic tea vendor Mahida said that he (Modi) has decimated the difference between royalty and a small man like him and showed that he would work for the people without any bias. “The Chief Minister came to me and asked - How are you Kiran,” said the elated tea vendor.
Except in 1996, Vadodara has been BJP bastion since 1991 as BJP candidates are winning from the seat with huge margin. In the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009, Shukla won with record margin of 1.36 lakh which was higher than then BJP’s PM candidate LK Advani. Out of seven assembly segments under Vadodara Lok Sabha constituency, BJP had won six in 2012 assembly election. BJP is also the ruling party in Vadodara District Panchayat as well as Vadodara Municipal Corporation.
