Vanzara quits IPS, rues let-down by Guj Govt in fight against terror
Accused in three fake encounter cases, imprisoned Gujarat Police DIG DG Vanzara tendered his resignation to the State home department on Tuesday. In his 10-page resignation letter, the suspended IPS officer has blamed Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former Home Minister Amit Shah for not protecting those policemen who fought against terrorists.
Vanzara was sent to jail seven years ago for being allegedly involved in three encounters in three consecutive years — Ishrat Jahan and other three (2004), Soharbuddin Sheikh and his wife Kauserbi (2005), and Tulsiram Prajapati (2006).
The 1987 batch IPS officer’s resignation may have far-reaching consequences as the investigation agencies would try to extract more details from him, especially whether the encounters were politically inspired.
“As many as 32 policemen, including six IPS officers, are languishing in different jails of Gujarat. To the best of my knowledge, nowhere in the country, such a big number of police officers were arrested and kept in jails for such a long period, except Gujarat. The most notable part of whole episode is that they are made to suffer in jails, in spite of the
fact they fought against Pakistan inspired terrorism with complete honesty, integrity and sincerity without falling prey of the mundane
temptation," Vanzara pointed out in a letter addressed to the Gujarat's additional chief secretary (Home).
This Government is not interested in protecting the policemen, he said, adding that it also has been clandestinely making all efforts to keep him and other officers incarcerated so as to save its own skin from CBI on one hand and gain political benefits on the other.
He claimed that the Modi Government reaped rich political dividends for the last 12 years by keeping alive the glow of encounter cases. He said when former Home Minister Amit Shah was arrested, the State Government hired senior most layer Ram Jethamalani, who secured Shah's release in record time of three months on regular bail. However when he and other two senior police officers were arrested by the CID crime, the State Government didn't bother to provide them even legal services, rued Vanzara.
He has also warned the Government that Shah's guidance might prove disastrous for the State Government. He also threatened that his silence must not be construed as his weakness and apathy on the part of the government towards the jailed cops could prove dangerous as cops and politicians were sailing in the same boat.
Terming Narendra Modi as his God, Canzara said that he (Modi) has failed to rise to the occasion under the influence of Shah. "Modi must pay heed to the agony of the jailed cops. The Government may not last long if fails to do so in his hurry towards New Delhi," he added.

Vanzara’s resignation not accepted by Gujarat Govt
Following explosive resignation of imprisoned IPS officer DG Vanzara blaming on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former Minister of State Amit Shah, the State Government on Wednesday decided to reject the suspended officer’s resignation.
Sources in the State Home department said that in principle the resignation has not been accepted as Vanzara is under prosecution. When contacted, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), SK Nanda confirmed that resignation of the 1987 batch IPS officer was not accepted.
In his 10-page letter dated September 1, Vanzara blamed  the Chief Minister and Shah who is now national BJP general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh affairs.
Vanzara asserted in the strong-worded resignation letter that he and other jailed police officers only implemented a “conscious policy” of the State Government. The encounter specialist went up to the extent that by that logic, the entire Government should be in Taloja Central Jail at Navi Mumbai or in Sabarmati Central Prison at Ahmedabad where all accused police officials are kept.
He also mentioned that he was ready to sacrifice all his post retirement benefits and would like to consider being relieved from service with effect from the date of resignation letter.
59-year-old Vanzara came in to police department through Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) as DYSP in 1980. In 1987, he was nominated as Gujarat Cadre IPS officer. Prior to him, another accused in Ishrat Jahan encounter case GL Singhal has also submitted resignation. Speculation is rife among the political and administrative circles of Gujarat about who will be the next to submit resignation.
